The Computing and ICT department aims to give students the essential skills they need in Computing and ICT to prepare them for successful independent living within, and beyond, NCW.
The department has over 40 years experience of working with access technology both personally and supporting young people to develop their skills.
The department prepares students for national exams using teaching methods adapted to give vision impaired students full access to all areas of the Computer Science curriculum. This enables them to study qualifications successfully up to level 3, and prepares them to go on to study at university.
In addition to this, the department provides a personalised programme of IT support to ensure all students are able to access the wider college curriculum using appropriate IT equipment. This includes working on a one-to-one basis with students on a wide range of hardware and software including Windows OS, Apple iOS, iPadOS and Android, MS Office, Google’s G-suite, Braille displays, Braille computers and more.
The department has also worked with industry leaders and start-ups developing specialist equipment for learners with a visual impairment. This has provided students with exciting opportunities to work on some groundbreaking projects.
