Can Cook, Will Cook!

Think you can’t cook? Our free cooking club for young people aged 8-14 who have a vision impairment will prove you can!

Find your way around the kitchen and some basic equipment, learn some handy tips and tricks, and enjoy something delicious to eat that you’ve created at the end of the session!

Ran by NCW’s experienced staff and designed to build confidence and independence in the kitchen whilst having some fun.

Please see below for each of the planned sessions, as well as a list of equipment and ingredients you will need to obtain before the event. 

All sessions are offered remotely via Google Meet – you will receive a link once signed up.
Please note that an adult must be present to supervise.

Tuesday 11 May

Pizza roll ups

Equipment:

  • Baking tray x 2
  • Baking paper
  • Knife
  • Spoon
  • Grater
  • Pastry brush
  • Bowl
  • Sharp knife
  • Chopping board 

Ingredients:

  • 150g mixed veg peppers / mushrooms/ tinned sweetcorn320g puff pastry (1 sheet)
  • 75g  tomato pizza sauce
  • 100g grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano

Tomato and bacon muffins

Equipment:

  • Muffin tin
  • 6 paper cases
  • Sharp knife
  • Chopping board
  • Ice cream scoop
  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Teaspoon

Ingredients:

  • 2 smoked bacon medallions, cooked finely chopped
  • 125g self-raising wholemeal flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 50g butter spread
  • 100ml milk
  • 3 cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 30g Cheddar, grated

Let’s make bread

Equipment:

  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Baking tray
  • Baking paper
  • Knife
  • Pastry brush
  • Bowl
  • Weighing scales

Ingredients:

  • 700g strong white flour
  • 1 x 5ml spoon salt
  • 1 x 7g sachet of dried yeast or a bread dough packet
  • 425ml hand-hot water
  • Raisins
  • Milk for glazing

Giant Chocolate Chip Cookie

Equipment:

  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Baking tray/ pizza stone round
  • Baking paper

 

Ingredients:

  • 115g butter, softened
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 50g brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 125g self-raising flour
  • ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 200g mixed roughly chopped chocolate (white, milk and plain)
