The chimes of Big Ben heard in the LRC!

Earlier this month, we had the privilege of welcoming Clare Mullin, Senior Education and Engagement Officer from the UK Parliament, to NCW. Clare delivered a series of engaging workshops to all our students, shedding light on the important roles of the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the UK Government.

Her visit was packed with interactive elements, including sound effects and tactile materials, which brought Parliament to life for our students.

Our students impressed Clare with their knowledge and enthusiasm, contributing thoughtful ideas on policy areas that matter most to them. The lively discussions covered a range of issues—from transportation, particularly challenges on the M25, to concerns about the NHS and environmental sustainability. Speaker Mullin’s call of “Order, order!” was met with quick responses, adding a fun, authentic touch to their debate.

It wasn’t just the students who got involved—our staff also joined in on the action! A spirited conversation broke out in the staffroom around the future structure of the House of Lords while Clare enjoyed a well-earned cup of tea. It was a day full of learning, debate, and engagement, and we’re thrilled to see our students continuing to reflect on the topics long after the session ended, particularly our Year 10s, who carried the discussion into their next class.

Clare’s visit left a lasting impact, and we’re grateful for this opportunity to bring the workings of Parliament into the heart of our school.
