Year 13 BTEC students became pyrotechnicians for their last lesson before half term!
Disclaimer: do not try this at home!
During their lesson with Head of Science, Mr Stark, students first of all investigated flame tests, finding out how to identify different metals by the colour flames produced when burnt. Metal salts were dissolved in alcohol and then sprayed through a Bunsen burner flame creating a dramatic flash of colour!
After this, the budding Scientists made sparklers using iron and magnesium which fizzed and sparked just like the ones you can buy in November!
Jack and Ethan can now add pyrotechnician to their list of skills – all observed by Sonali who accessed the lesson remotely.
Another fantastic science lesson by the amazing science team at NCW!
