NCW, a National Residential School for Young People with a Vision Impairment, Joins Forces with Barclays Girls’ Football School Partnership
At NCW, we believe that students who are blind or vision-impaired should have access to all sports, not only making sports accessible to their specific needs but also breaking down gender stereotypes in the process.
Football is a popular choice at NCW, a sport many students may not have been encouraged to participate in at a mainstream setting. When students first arrive at NCW, Mrs Price, our Head of PE, ensures they have the freedom to explore various sports in a student-led environment—an opportunity many might not have in a mainstream school. Their vision impairment is never seen as an obstacle to their physical education or involvement in team sports.
We are proud to be part of the Barclays Girls’ Football School Partnership, ensuring all students, including girls, can access football with appropriate adaptations. In recognition of our commitment, Barclays have sent us a beautiful wooden award which we will display with pride.
Ruby, a Year 8 student at NCW, is passionate about football. If you ever need to find her at lunchtime—come rain or shine—she’ll be on the blue Astro pitch, playing football with her friends. We caught up with Ruby to hear more about her love of the game:
