Inspiring, nurturing and empowering young people with a vision impairment.

Outreach Service

Supporting young people

As leaders in the education of children and young people with a vision impairment, we feel it is important to us to share our expertise and experience to benefit young people who are not currently studying with us.

Our outreach programme is available to young people, families, teachers and teaching assistants who can access resources here and learn more about what we do. We teach children and young people who are vision impaired all day, in all subjects – so we really do know what we’re talking about.

Outreach Events

Each academic year we put together a programme of free or very low cost training events here at the college which are suitable for parents and professionals working with young people who are vision impaired. Our annual GSCE Revision course is also a great way for students in Years 9 and 10 to help prepare for GCSEs.

Reaching Out Bulletins

We regularly publish a Reaching Out Bulletin which is designed to share expertise in education with professionals working with vision impaired young people. Please click here to see all bulletins current and past.

"Can I say a huge thank you for the fantastic visit you put together for us QTVI students. NCW is a wonderful place to be. What you do and provide is priceless. I was overwhelmed with passion and commitment of the speakers we heard and the students themselves! I am embarrassed for the lack of understanding in schools, and I'm inspired to be the best QTVI for the students I support."

Hosting trainee QTVI teachers

As part of our commitment we are able to host teachers as part of their QTVI qualification.

Advice

If you have a specific query or question relating to teaching a child with a vision impairment, we would recommend that you book onto one of our Outreach Open Days, as queries rarely have a simple answer! If you are unable to do that we will certainly try and assist via email. You can email the Head of Outreach directly on [email protected]

Resources

As part of our charity work we are able to share some of our resources with other professionals who are working in education with children and young people who are blind or vision impaired. Parents supporting their child might also find some useful information here.

We are building a portfolio of video, audio and written resources accessible via the Resources link

Visits to NCW

If you do not see an event that suits you, we can set up a bespoke day or external visit. We are open to hosting visits to NCW to give an insight into how we teach and care for our young people. Trainee teachers, overseas professionals and families are all welcome to visit the campus and find out more.
